My first (and last) morning came early in The Scanlan Hotel located on the island of Tutuila in American Samoa, or at least dawn's early light. I know I stated earlier that The Scanlan Hotel was more Hostel than Hotel but; The Scanlan Hotel, if considered a Hostel, brings a new and all time low to the idea of Hostel. My room couldn't possibly have been swept, vacuumed, or cleaned in any way for a very long time. During the early morning hours I was already observing Tutuila wildlife!!

Cockroaches... big one's, small ones, tiny baby ones, black ones, those of the brown German variety, and the really large ones of the Palmetto bug stature.

A battery of winged termites also littered my Scanlan Hotel Room landscape and in my good fortune I was blessed to witness a gaggle of ants carry away what appeared to be a big and nasty looking spider.

Ever vigilant and keeping a wary eye to make sure no roaches crawled up in order to hitch a ride, I managed to hang each of my bags on the door in order that they not touch the debris covered floor.

My sleep deprived eyes begged for closure, but only after spreading out a lawn and leaf bag that I generally use for dirty laundry did I dare even sit. It was time to go out and find some bug bombs and a can of boric acid..
